Nigeria is known for its wealth in natural resources but its enthusiastic population of multitasking entrepreneurs, with thousands of small businesses (formal and informal) is often forgotten. Despite, employment creation remains weak and insufficient to absorb the fast-growing labour force, resulting in high rate of unemployment and underemployment. The people of Nigeria have continually evolved, in their individual struggle to build a sustainable economy. With over 90 million unemployed and underemployed citizens and a long list of socio-economic injustice, Nigeria’s people question the nation’s governance. In 2019, as a strategy to increase the nation’s revenue, a 50% taxation increase was rolled out. This affected the bottom of the pyramid the most as inflation increased and the value of minimum wage decreased. The effect is felt on the streets and in the homes of millions of Nigerians, many of which find no way to ventilate their rage but to endure, improvise or push back by simply exercising a basic citizen right to “peaceful protest”. Nigerian transmitted into a democratic government in 1999. Protesting governance in all its forms has been a culture of activism in Nigeria way before the 1885 Berlin conference era.
